CKX and Cirque du Soleil announce the return of Elvis to Las Vegas at MGM Mirage's Project CityCenter

Elvis Presley Enterprises and Cirque du Soleil have reached an agreement with MGM MIRAGE to create a permanent Elvis Presley show at the CityCenter hotel/casino, currently under construction between Bellagio and the Monte Carlo and due to open in November 2009. While details remain sketchy, it sounds as if the show will be along similar lines to Cirque's current LOVE extravaganza at the Mirage, which celebrates the music of the Beatles. "This will be the first step in establishing a twenty-first century presence in Vegas for the King," explained a spokesman for the new project.

Elvis Presley show, to be permanently located at CityCenter
Hotel/Casino expected to open November 2009

Elvis Presley Enterprises and Cirque du Soleil have
reached an agreement with MGM MIRAGE (NYSE: MGM)
to create a permanent Elvis Presley show at the
CityCenter hotel/casino, under construction in
Las Vegas. The show is expected to open with the
hotel in November 2009.
The deal announced during Elvis Week, the week
in which we commemorate Elvis' untimely passing
on August 16, 1977, marks the return of Elvis to
Las Vegas, the site of some of the most remarkable
performances of his illustrious career.
Cirque du Soleil's creative team is inspired by
this new extravaganza. The creative combination
of live musicians and singers, projections, dance
and the latest in multimedia sound and lighting
technology are stimulating and aim at offering an
emotional bond with the audience. The show will
bring Elvis back to Las Vegas for millions of his
existing fans and create a buzz that will enable
the persona of Elvis to reach untold numbers of
new fans. A design collaboration between
MGM MIRAGE and six internationally acclaimed
architects, CityCenter will open in 2009 on 66
acres between the Bellagio and Monte Carlo resorts.
At the heart of the action on the Las Vegas Strip,
CityCenter will feature a soaring 60-story, 4,000-room
hotel/casino, two 400-room non-gaming hotels, 500,000
square feet of retail shops, dining and entertainment
venues and nearly 2,800 luxury condominiums.
Robert F.X. Sillerman, Chairman and CEO of CKX, Inc.,
commented, "I am pleased that during this time,
when we remember Elvis Presley and celebrate his
life, we are able to announce his return to Las Vegas,
a place where he truly rose to iconic status. And with
the remarkable creative talent of Cirque du Soleil,
fans who saw Elvis perform, as well as those who never
had a chance to see him, will be able to experience
Elvis in an entirely new and exciting way. This will
be the first step in establishing a twenty-first century
presence in Vegas for the King."
Guy Laliberté, Founder of Cirque du Soleil, commented,
"This new creative challenge is exactly what we strive
at accomplishing in the development of our new productions.
Cirque du Soleil is thrilled to be involved in CityCenter
and we are particularly honored to be entrusted with
this assignment. We are working closely with our partners
to ensure the public will have an unforgettable
encounter with the King of Rock and Roll. Elvis had
a unique relationship with his adoring fans in Vegas
and a large part of our mission is to recreate the
excitement and the spirit of joy he generated here."
Bobby Baldwin, President and CEO of Mirage Resorts,
an MGM MIRAGE operating division, said, "We are thrilled
to partner with our friends and colleagues at Cirque du Soleil,
who are known the world over for creating memorable
entertainment experiences. With this show we will bring
together Elvis, an icon of Las Vegas entertainment
history, with CityCenter, a destination that represents
the future of this remarkable city."
The announcement represents another step in the
creative partnership between CKX and Cirque du Soleil.
In May, the two companies announced an agreement
for the creation, development, production and promotion
of Elvis Presley Projects, featuring touring and
permanent shows as well as multimedia interactive
"Elvis Experiences" throughout the world. CKX and Cirque du Soleil
expect by 2008 to open at least one touring Elvis show
in Europe and/or Asia, and one "Elvis Experience"
outside the United States. Beginning in 2009,
at least one Elvis Presley Project will be opened
in each of the next six years.

Giving Their Due to Two Vegas Traditions

OK, so Las Vegas isn't Philadelphia with an Independence Hall, or Boston with an Old North Church. But even though it's barely a century old - a mere child by most metropolitan standards - Vegas has its own traditional icons. And just as heritage is honored and preserved elsewhere, some of the very things that are quintessential Las Vegas and have helped make the desert city sinful, or at least naughty - the showgirl and the cocktail - are getting similar treatment.

Las Vegas ShowgirlThe Las Vegas showgirl and the tradition of the sequined spectacles that once set the entertainment standard on the Las Vegas Strip are subjects of a backstage tour at Bally's Las Vegas, where Don Arden's Jubilee! is one of the few remaining large-scale shows of that genre still being produced.

Meanwhile, at the Commander's Palace restaurant in the mall attached to the Aladdin, the Museum of the American Cocktail is a whimsical and informative chronicle of all things shaken and stirred.

The backstage tour of Jubilee! is an hour-long look at how the gams-and-glitter extravaganza, featuring the sinking of the Titanic, is put together.

Either a "show girl or show boy" guides the tour group, which is limited to a maximum of 25, a casino spokeswoman says. Tours are given 11 a.m. Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays. Tickets, available at the Bally's box office, are $15 per person, or $10 with the purchase of a Jubilee! ticket. Visitors get to see dressing rooms, make-up areas, and the lower-level staging area, where an elevator system lifts the massive sets, some weighing as much as 6,000 pounds, into place.

Did you know that showgirls, during a two-performance night, will go up and down 2,500 steps in high heels and wearing headdresses that weigh 6 to 25 pounds?

The late Arden - nicknamed the Master of Disaster for his special- effects scenes that featured sinking cruise ships, blazing zeppelins, and crumbling buildings - helped make the splashy reviews, with their topless beauties and quirky specialty acts, a Vegas staple.

Equally famous are the showgirl costumes of Don Mackie, and contemporary and vintage outfits are part of the tour, including one that predates the fire at the then-MGM Grand, now Bally's, in 1980 that killed 84 people. Arden was preparing to open the show when the fire struck.

According to one account, the producer and others escaped the blaze, some covering their mouths with towels soaked in vodka because they had run out of club soda.

Less dramatic uses of spirits are featured in an artifacts and timeline exhibit at the Commander's Palace, where the Museum of the American Cocktail has been on display since the spring. The museum was originally in New Orleans' French Quarter and survived Hurricane Katrina. The displays were moved to Las Vegas, where they are the focal point of monthly dinners that feature course-and-cocktail pairings.

September's was a vodka dinner; this month's was bourbon, and December will be Tiki drinks (November's liquor theme was still being decided.). The menu for this month's dinner included bourbon-smoked duck, pan-roasted scallops, Louisiana alligator, wild boar, and chocolate bourbon pecan pie, with complementing libations.

The museum is in a private dining room and features 12 glass cases filed with decanters, cocktail shakers, bartenders' guides, old-time ads, and gadgets used for concocting drinks that represent the cocktail's 200-year history.

Mixologist Dale DeGroff, founding president of the museum and a former beverage manager at New York's Rainbow Room, has called the cocktail a true American expression, akin to baseball and jazz. It was the late 19th and early 20th centuries that represented the Golden Age of the cocktail, DeGroff has said in interviews, because famous drinks such as the martini, the sour and the julep were invented or perfected then.

Did you know that, during Prohibition, folks with obliging physicians could get prescriptions for alcoholic beverages? It's true - just look at the bottle of whiskey marked "issued by the U.S. Government."

The cocktail museum is open 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily, except when the private dining room is booked.

Station Has New Concert Format

Don't want to drive all the way to Green Valley Ranch from North Las Vegas for a Chris Botti concert?

Once Aliante Station opens on Nov. 11, you won't necessarily have to.

The addition of Access Showroom at Aliante will give Station an additional concert venue and it will begin presenting some touring acts both at Aliante and at GVR. Technological advances -- and the rising cost of gas -- helped prompt this change of format, according to columnist Mike Weatherford.

However, "Rock of Love" fans in Henderson will still have to schlep up to Aliante to see Bret Michaels on Nov. 28 because he's an Aliante exclusive.

Rampart hosting inaugural Nevada Film Festival

You lose some, you win some.

Las Vegas may have lost CineVegas, the city's highest-profile film festival. (At least for now, anyway.)

But there's a new festival in town -- this weekend's Nevada Film Festival -- to help pick up the slack.

"For fans of CineVegas, this is a good avenue to hold them over," festival director Brandon Parker says. "We believe there's always room for more quality films."

The new festival -- presented at Summerlin's Rampart Casino -- kicks off at 7 p.m. today 11/20/09 with an opening-night bash for filmmakers and film buffs alike, at J.C. Wooloughan's Irish Pub.

The movies begin at 10 a.m. Saturday in the Rampart's Marquis Ballroom and continue all day and into the night. The festival concludes with a 10 p.m. Awards ceremony.

The festival's 20-movie lineup represents "just about every category and genre," from fictional features to documentaries and short subjects, Parker says. "We try to offer a really wide variety."

In addition, except for a handful of premieres, most of the festival selections have "already achieved certain success" at other festivals, illustrating their appeal, he adds.

"There's a greater incentive for the public to come out and give them a chance," Parker comments.

Among the highlights: the festival's Grand Jury Award-winner, the documentary "Beyond the Call," described as an "Indiana Jones-meets-Mother-Teresa adventure" about three former soldiers who deliver humanitarian aid to civilians and doctors in war-torn areas around the world. It debuted at New York's Tribeca Film Festival and has won awards at festivals from Palm Springs and Santa Fe to the Las Vegas International Film Festival.

By contrast, the Best Nevada Feature winner, "Tales From the Catholic Church of Elvis," is based on writer/actor/singer Mercy Malick's award-winning play about growing up as a Catholic schoolgirl in Las Vegas. (The Best Nevada Short, "Growing Up Vegas," previously screened at CineVegas and the Las Vegas International Film Festival.)

The first Nevada Film Festival, which is planned as an annual event, has been in the works for about a year, Parker notes.

"My associates and I are huge film buffs," he explains. "We wanted to bring more quality independent films to Southern Nevada."

A full festival schedule and other information is available online at http://www.nevadafilmfestival.com
